Estate Planning for the Modern Family ~ Case Studies in Life Experiences

Date: Wednesday, June 25, 2014
Time: 8:00am - 10:45am
Location: Hilton Garden Inn, Palm Coast (Just west of I-95, exit 284)

In May, 2014, the Society of Financial Service Professionals (SFSP) sponsored a national Video Teleconference for all their chapters, with continuing education credits for all who attended.    Our EPC of the Fun Coast purchased the rights to the broadcast and workbook from the Jacksonville SFSP so the information to be presented is quite fresh and timely.

Program Overview

With the demise of DOMA the modern family is being redefined. Through short "based-on-fact" vignettes this program will focus on three varieties of the traditional marriage: the blended family (both spouses are divorced; there are children from his first marriage as well as children from their present marriage); the non-US citizen spouse; and the same-sex union couple. The program will highlight the complicated issues these unions create and offer estate planning solutions for today's varied unions between individuals.

Attendees will learn:

  • The use of the Credit Shelter Trust for the benefit of the current spouse in the blended family
  • How the Qualified Terminal Interest Trust minimizes taxes for the US citizen spouse in the non-US citizen spouse union
  • The relevant estate planning issues in states that do and do not recognize same sex marriages (Portability vs. Credit Shelter Trusts; Qualified Resident Domestic Order; life insurance in an ILIT, etc.)

Who should attend?

Estate planners, financial planners, investment advisors, insurance producers, and retirement counselors.

Program Workbook:    Those who reserve will be given a link to the program workbook.   Some may want to download the workbook to their computer or electronic notebook and follow along that way.  Others may want to print the document to keep a paper record.  Either way, it's part of the program.  We're saving paper by offering the workbook this way.    We will print a very few copies (for a fee) for people who haven't made other plans.

Continuing Education:        CE Credits will NOT be granted by our council for this event, BUT, if your profession allows self administration of CE Credits, we can provide proof of attendance, as well as the program workbook you can use if you can document your own participation to earn credits.    (The SFSP was able to grant CE credits in all states for they filed the program for a specific time at many locations and monitored participation.  We can't piggyback on that.)
